    Cross-border electronic commerce: distance effects and express delivery in European Union markets

    This empirical study examines distance effects on cross-border electronic commerce and in particular the importance of express delivery in reducing the time dimension of distance. E-commerce provides suppliers with a range of opportunities to reduce distance as perceived by online buyers. They can reduce psychological barriers to cross-border demand by designing websites that simplify the search for and comparison of products and suppliers across countries. They can reduce cost barriers by applying pricing strategies that redistribute transportation costs, and they can overcome time barriers offering express delivery services. This study of 721 regions in five countries of the European Union shows that distance is not “dead” in e-commerce, that express delivery reduces distance for cross-border demand, and that e-demand delivered by express services is more time sensitive and less price sensitive than e-demand satisfied by standard delivery. The willingness of e-customers to pay for express services is shown to be affected by income and by the relative lead-time benefits and express charges. Furthermore, the adoption of express delivery is positively associated with e-loyalty in terms of repurchase rates. The results confirm the importance for e-suppliers of cleverly designed delivery services to reduce distance in order to attract online customers across borders

    Evaluation of Collagen Membranes Coated with Testosterone and Alendronate to Improve Guided Bone Regeneration in Mandibular Bone Defects in Minipigs

    Contains fulltext : 232819.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the present in vivo study was to evaluate whether pericard collagen membranes coated with ancillary amounts of testosterone and alendronate in a poly-lactic glycolic acid (PLGA) carrier as compared to uncoated membranes will improve early bone regeneration. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In each of 16 minipigs, four standardized mandibular intraosseous defects were made bilaterally. The defects were filled with Bio-Oss(®) granules and covered with a non-coated or coated membrane. Membranes were spray-coated with 4 layers of PLGA containing testosterone and alendronate resulting in 20, 50 or 125 μg/cm(2) of testosterone and 20 µg/cm(2) alendronate (F20, F50, F125). Non-coated membranes served as controls (F0). Animals were sacrificed at 6 and 12 weeks after treatment. Qualitative and quantitative histological evaluations of bone regeneration were performed. Differences between groups were assessed by paired Student's t-test. RESULTS: Light microscopical analysis showed new bone formation that was in close contact with the Bio-Oss(®) surface without an intervening non-mineralized tissue layer. Histomorphometric analysis of newly formed bone showed a significant 20% increase in area in the F125 coated membrane treated defects (40 [SD 10]%) compared to the F0 treated defects after 6 weeks (33 [SD 10]%, P = 0.013). At week 12, the total percentage of new bone was increased compared to week 6, but no increase in newly formed bone compared to F0 was observed. CONCLUSIONS: The data from this in vivo study indicate that F125 collagen membranes coated with testosterone and alendronate resulted in superior bone formation (+24%) when normalized to control sites using uncoated membranes

    Lrp5 functions in bone to regulate bone mass

    The human skeleton is affected by mutations in low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 (LRP5). To understand how LRP5 influences bone properties, we generated mice with osteocyte-specific expression of inducible Lrp5 mutations that cause high and low bone mass phenotypes in humans. We found that bone properties in these mice were comparable to bone properties in mice with inherited mutations. We also induced an Lrp5 mutation in cells that form the appendicular skeleton but not in cells that form the axial skeleton; we observed that bone properties were altered in the limb but not in the spine. These data indicate that Lrp5 signaling functions locally, and they suggest that increasing LRP5 signaling in mature bone cells may be a strategy for treating human disorders associated with low bone mass, such as osteoporosis

    Australian Pupil Control Ideology (PCI) studies have generally utilized small samples in an endeavour to establish significant relationships between teacher/administrator control orientation, and a variety of person-specific variables. The present study examines the tenability of a number of American biographically-derived hypotheses in the Australian context. The explanatory power of the combined biographical variables of teacher age, experience, sex, organizational status and academic qualifications for variances in PCI is seriously questioned since as little as 6 percent of PCI variance may be explained by reference to these particular variables. Some potentially more fruitful avenues of enquiry for future PCI research are proffered
